The executor is the person who is responsible for administering your estate after your death.  Whilst you can appoint anyone you like, it is important that you appoint someone that you trust and is able to identify your surviving family members easily.  Your executor must be over the age of 18 at the time that you pass away.

The responsibilities of the executor will vary depending on the type of estate, however general duties include:

  • Notifying beneficiaries

  • Determining and then taking care of the estate

  • Applying for probate

  • Completing income tax returns

  • Paying debts

The executor does not need to have legal or financial expertise. As mentioned above, nominate someone who is close to you. They can always seek advice from a legal or financial expert if they need it.
